How Was Norway’s Lottery Fiasco Allowed To Happen?

Imagine being told that you had won a large amount of money on the lottery and then this ending up as a mistake. As soon as you get the news, not only do you end up mentally spending it, but also probably start putting deposits down for high ticket items.

I can only imagine how this must feel. The recent case in Norway where it was revealed that thousands had been told that they had been made millionaires because of a Norsk Tipping lottery win has caused uproar and I can’t blame any of them.

Now, it’s not as if Norway is exactly a third world country – indeed, it has some of the best infrastructure in the world, so for me, there is no excuse for such poor organisation.

It screams a complete breakdown in communication within the state-owned lottery regulator and the buck simply has to stop there. I can’t believe that this was allowed to happen and, for sure there needs to be an independent inquiry.

Measures Need To Be In Place

I also think that there needs to be an internal review of the regulator to understand exactly what happened and why it did. While for sure, there will have been a technical error, ultimately, this is still driven by human involvement.

In a country that has one of the highest GDPs in the world, I would think they also have a large talent pool of educated individuals capable of making sure that something like this does not happen – or at least, indeed, does not happen again.

The fallout for sure must still be widespread and I for one would feel quite sick to find out that I had won millions only for this amount to turn out to be a hundred quid or so. At least, if it was an error, I would want to know immediately – five minutes or so after that this was a mistake.

To be honest though – if it was also me, I would definitely like to have it officially confirmed, whether this means calling the regulator and speaking to someone in charge who can cross-check the results. I think at least until then, I would keep a level head about it – probably tell myself that it isn’t real.

Compensation Should Be Offered

Absolutely, I think that those who were told that they had won ‘millions’ should receive some form of compensation – obviously not the amount they had been told they had won, but something that goes some way to making up for the mistake.

Then there will have been some people who probably started already spending what they had won. Deciding who gets what based on this would be a difficult process. Either each case is reviewed individually, or everyone gets the same amount.

For me, it is similar to going on holiday, something going wrong and claiming compensation, whether this be a delayed flight or accommodation not being up to scratch.
